The year 2024 will serve as a year of transition into what we are calling the “franchise model” for offering EMDR Therapy training in cooperation with the Institute for Creative Mindfulness. In this new system, individual faculty members (or those who wish to draw their resources together) will be expected to manage all business aspects of EMDR Therapy training under their own business (e.g., Amber Stiles-Bodnar Consulting, Touchstone Institute, Start Again Associates, Redefine Therapy- Dr. Jamie’s new solo business). They will run as autonomous businesses where they can set their own pricing structure (within reason as highlighted in the terms of new licenses), and have their own team of consultants and facilitators (as long as those individuals agree to the terms of the ICM Social Justice Statement and have at least audited one full round of ICM training if initially trained outside of ICM). We will still require you to submit your trainings onto a master calendar so that you can coordinate reasonably and not have major clashes in dates, and so that we as ICM can track royalty/licensing payments which you will be responsible to submit on your own 30 days after the training. ICM will not, however, weigh in on any “regional rights” or seniority battles about who gets to list trainings where and when since we see you as your own businesses and trust you to reasonably coordinate with your colleagues.

In this new system, the Institute for Creative Mindfulness/Creative Mindfulness Media will serve as the educational publishing company that puts out the curriculum that you will license. Operating in this way significantly decreases Dr. Jamie Marich and ICM’s personal liability for other team members. Use of this curriculum also brings your company the connection to Dr. Jamie Marich’s name and body of work, which we know that many of you have found valuable in establishing and marketing your trainings. In this new system, the Institute for Creative Mindfulness takes responsibility for the material and the curriculum that we produce, yet the individual training providers, which you all are now as approved by EMDRIA, take on the responsibility for your trainings and the facilitators working your trainings. We are still working out some legal details about what will remain of the ICM Team structure of consultants and consultants-in-training. We recognize that many ICM Team members work for several trainers within ICM and consult across the range of trainings, and we are still hoping to keep a centralized directory structure in place of team members who do meet the minimum standards of the Institute for Creative Mindfulness and are willing to continue engaging with our team meetings/gathering and educational opportunities. As faculty members licensing the ICM curriculum we would hope that you continue to draw from this centralized listing of consultants and consultants-in-training for your trainings, although you would have a greater degree of freedom in this new model to create more of your own team.

All current ICM faculty members wishing to sign on under this new system would be expected to have their own LMS/registration system in place for January 1, 2024. Under this new system you would also be completely responsible for submitting your quarterly reports of completed students to EMDRIA, and submitting your final certificates of completion. Offering of CE credit hours depends on which level of franchising you select.

As we’ve discussed at several of our team meetings, this new system decentralizes our operations quite a bit, which may create more of its own new burdens in customer service. For instance, if a student cancels your training and wants to move to another ICM-affiliated licensee, they will have to cancel your training and re-register with the other. There may be some initial chaos that we need to work through. In viewing 2024 as a transitional year where we can all still benefit from the brand recognition of the Institute for Creative Mindfulness name, franchising agreements will be granted for a one year period. It is my hope that if this structure stays in place and works for all of us through 2024, that we will transition away from the word Institute in our title and perhaps view the educational company more as Creative Mindfulness Media to at least keep part of the brand recognition in place. We have also not fully thought through if there will be a protocol for bringing in new faculty members from the existing team who might wish to license the ICM EMDR Therapy curriculum, or for those newly approaching ICM. For 2024, we hope to still keep our faculty team as it is before expanding any potential reach.

*Faculty licensees can agree to come on at one level and then downgrade or upgrade if their circumstances change. Our goal long-term is to have everyone at the 10 or 20% level. We also have some flexibility in making custom arrangements if you end up needing more ICM Home Office support to run your own business. We can also offer tailored flexibility for any trainings that you are offering through non-profit organizations or at a significantly reduced discount to help more people access training.

+ Licensees choosing to opt in at the 10 or 20% level can also opt to pay ICM’s home office a one-time set up fee to help them set up their own LMS systems if they do not want to commit to the 30% level. Pricing will be quoted case-by-case by Garrett LaValley, although we are currently approximating 10 hours of work ($1250.00) for such a task.
